Re: Mars colonization versus Stanford Torus

On Wed, 31 May 2006 16:56:05 +0000 (UTC), in a place far, far away,
Jim Davis <jimdavis2@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> made the phosphor on my monitor
glow in such a way as to indicate that:

I guessed this one.

No evidence that he is willing to build a space colony for any
other reason but profit. Bezos' attitude towards space seems to be
entirely pragmatic.

Not really. Certainly not based on interviews with him. I think he
sees it more as a hobby right now.

His name is Elon Musk. He co-founded Paypal.

I missed this one. I thought you were going with Walt Anderson.

No evidence that he is willing to build a space colony for any
other reason but profit. Musk's attitude towards space seems to be
entirely pragmatic.

Then you've never heard any interviews or press conferences with him.

"Musk said he also hopes to launch Falcon family rockets from Cape
Canaveral, Florida in the future, and believes that it is essential to
push humans further into space.

'Becoming a space faring civilization or a multi-planet species it may
well be the hardest thing that humanity ever does,' Musk said. 'Life
has a duty to extend itself and we, as life?s representatives, should
do so.'"

I see no reason to think (based on past history) that either of
these two men (or Anderson for that matter) would be willing to
drop a few billions (along with dozens if not hundreds of their
fellow billionaires) to build Island One for Mike Combs.

That's an interesting straw man.
