Sending a probe to another system final velocity?

I know about the BIPS Project Daedalus plan. That though is some time
off if ever. Another concept that is currently popular is the have a
*big* light sail for a probe and have the sun's photons/solar wind
push it.
A version of the light sail method I have read is as the photon/solar
wind push from the sun will eventually petter out, some researches I
have read propose having a nuclear ion drive to take over when the
light sail has done it's job and has been discarded to up the final
speed higher still.
Would such a twin stage light sail ion drive probe reach Daedalus's
final velocity speed of 12% of c? If not then there is no reason to
use the light sail ion method, as Daedalus would still take 50 years
to reach the Bernard system.
