I note that one of the options people have talked about for a new,
higher thrust 2nd stage that might allow the EELVs to launch a CEV is
built around 4 RL-10s. IIRC, this is the configuration that DC-X had.
Could the layout, plumbing and control systems for the the propulsion
side of the DC-X act as a starting point to jump-start such a design? I
understand that the design would have to be optimized for vacuum.
If on the other hand a clean slate would make more sense, at least the
whole design shouldn't cost (much) more than the entire DC-X project, no?
The CEV is vastly over engineered and certainly is not necessary to
transfer crews to and from larger interplanetary spacecraft and their
embarkation points. It needs to be killed. Do you understand the
concept of killing a program at NASA? You should, they've done enough
of it in the past.
