trends, many of them mutually exclusive.

There are technologies already on the horizon that will have dramatic
effects on our ability to manipulate matter in an energy efficient
way, being developed for manufacturing purposes. If they happen (and
few are willing to make a credible case that they won't--it's just a
matter of how long it will take) they will have a side benefit of
making space travel and habitation affordable.
