Of the 70+ "short takes" here, maybe ten (Steve Squyres, Freeman
Dyson, and Piet Hut on the search for life, and others on x-treme
astronomy and cosmology) involve space science; not one puts manned
spaceflight or its possible consequences at or near the focus.
That's not entirely surprising - as the astronaut on orbit has about
as much to do with science as the deckhand on an oceanographic
research vessel does. He's an enabler and supporter of the projects a
scientist wants done - but not a scientist (per se) himself.
Admittedly these are billed as *science* rather than technology
forecasts. Still, it's an interesting data point on just how much (or
little) mind share space currently has on the pop-science scene.
In some ways I think I'd have been disturbed if space had shown up
widely on the list. Space is a place, a means - not a goal.
