Which brings up a good question - just how thick does a steel hull need
to be to go all the way down to the bottom of the ocean?
On the "Trieste" the crew sphere was five inches thick and 6.5 feet in
diameter, but was over-thick for safety's sake.
It's over thick for safety's sake - because we cannot (IIRC/AIUI)
precisely predict the depth at which failure will occur. Localized
stresses, weak points, unequal tempering, etc... etc... can all cause
failure at depths less than predicted.
