Plainly the result of thinking about symbols that properly point beyond
thought. A finger pointing at the moon the Buddhists call it.

No 'suffering' here as of yet, unless your 'symbols' represent
something mathematically undiscernable, like the mental fog
of the eastern god (Buddah died, by the way) seems to point to.

Oh you're suffering! Otherwise you wouldn't produce such insufferable
rants! lol. Buddhists don't believe Buddah to be a god btw. Buddah
was a man. So, you're missing the whole point.

Please tellmeone thing Buddah did forthe suffering in the world
and I willleave in peace.

Buddah taught others the way to inner peace after finding the way
himself.

Who was this Prince Siddhartha? Better known as Buddha, he was born on
April 8, in the year 560 B.C. to King Suddhodana and Queen Maya (also
known as Mahamaya or Mayadevi) of Sakya (or Sakhya or Shakya) in
present day Nepal. Both of his parents came from the Gautama (or
Gotama) clan of the royal warrior caste. Maya died one week after
Siddhartha was born, and he was raised by her sister, Mahaprajapati.

Buddha grew up in the midst of great luxury. When he was born, prophets
had predicted that he would either be a great king or a buddha (truly
enlightened one.) He would become a buddha after seeing four signs - an
old man, a monk, a corpse, and someone who was ill.

Siddhartha's father wanted him to become a king, so he kept him away
from all places where he might meet such people. When Buddha was 19, he
was married to a young woman named Yashodhara. Buddha was apparently
somewhat content with the life at his father's palace for the first
twenty-nine years of his life, but in his late twenties, he encountered
the four signs. He began to think about life in general, and came to
the conclusion that all things are changeable. However, instead of
acknowledging the one true unchangable God, he sought 'enlightenment'
to free him from the cycle of reincarnation which he believed existed.
To do this, he left behind his wife, son, and family.

For six years, Siddhartha wandered, begged, starved himself, and tried
by other means to find enlightenment. Nothing worked. Finally, he ate a
good meal, bathed in a river, and sat down under a tree, later named
the Bo-tree, or tree of wisdom, vowing not to leave it until he was
enlightened. That night, he passed into a "super-conscious state" and
was enlightened. After he came out of the super-conscious state, he
danced for seven days and seven nights

It was at this time that Buddha received his name, which means
'enlightened one'. He was also known as 'Sakyamuni'(sage of the Sakya
clan), Gautama Buddha (since that was his family name), or simply
'Blessed One' .

He immediately began to tell others of his experience. For the next
forty-five years, he traveled, teaching throughout India. The area in
which he taught was particularly receptive to the new religion because
the former religion had become extremely corrupt.

Buddha re-visited his family seven years after he'd left it. His wife
had also practiced the severe austerities from the day he left, and
became the first of an order of Buddhistic nuns. Buddha's son, Rahula,
was sent by his mother to ask for his inheritance, and Buddha made him
a monk and bequeathed his wisdom to his son.

Buddha died 480 BC at the age of eighty. It seems that, although
feeble, he decided to make one last trip. On this trip, he evidently
ate something which caused him to become very ill. He died between two
sala trees, teaching up until the moment of his death. His final words
were: "Now, monks, I declare to you: all elements of personality are
subject to decay. Strive on untiringly!"

Wasn't he directing a path to enlight-
enment?

Yes.

If this is so, then aren't you trying to build a bridge
to the Almighty by intellectual ascent?

No. Quite the opposite.

He hasn't got that yet and is clearly very near mental collapse trying
to deal with the pain of his existence.

Not at all.

The good news is that his
mental collapse is the first step into a larger world that is not
accessible by thinking - but surrender. He'd call it surrender to
Christ or some such. He's in blaming mode - all those sinners out
there are the cause for HIS pain! lol.

No doubt that you ARE affected by the post with such a reactionary
view that seems to validate the 'mental collapse' approach to a
higher intellectal ascent (of some sort).

Yes, Buddah said 'be here now.' Which is very much the same feeling one
has when surrendering to Christ in context of the Christian religion or
surrendering to the will of Allah in the Muslim religion. Absolutely.
The great Christian philospher and writer Tolstoy pointed this out in
his book The Kingdom of God is Within You.

I must conclude, therefore, that a person of your complete under-
standing in to the way that rumor bins spin, cogs turn, and lines
are drawn in the sand, is because your intellectual capital is so
vast, so comprehensive, and yet so resolute that there is no need
to forgive anyperson for any sin ever committed, because 'cool'
is O.K., and humans are basically some lost raceof malignant
species in the galaxy.

You conclude wrongly.

Don't know why he felt compelled to waste sci.space.policy bandwidth
with his meaningless drivel. Probably thinks we need to be saved or
something. Us nerdy space guys.

This post though does point to a continuing need among people for
religion - even in the modern age. Joe Campbell says its the 'hero
task' of the modern age creating a theology that incorporates the
scientific method. Experiments that prove Christ or something. lol.
Richard Grassman thinks he's done it and its just a bit of
pharmacology. The drugs you speak of. He likes DMT. Others favor E
or K. Or some combination. Edgar Mitchell of the Noetic Institute
disagrees. Who knows? Helen Schuman says that a common theology is not
possible for humanity. A common experience of the transcendant IS.
Which is enough. As Jesus might have said, On this rock I will build
my Church! lol.

I don't know anything about Richard Grassman,

He's a medical doctor who wrote DMT The Spirit Molecule.

but I do know that
any foreign substance introduced into the bloodstream causes the
physiological state to change into something 'not made in the image
of God',i.e., something 'non-physiological'.

??? This is so stupid it makes my brain hurt.

Water causes the bloodstream to change, changing its viscosity and
other properties. Which state is natural? If one is thirsty, they
drink. Food causes changes also. If one is hungry they eat. There are
many many natural states available to us.

The body itself produces countless chemicals that are psychoactive that
affect our moods. Adrenaline for example prepare us for fight or
flight.

Clearly understanding the chemical basis of our moods is beneficial,
especially when applied medically. Understanding the chemical basis of
schizophrenia for example, and developing medicines for it is no more
sinful than understanding the chemical basis of diabetes and
introducing insulin to control blood sugar levels.

Obviously ALL experiences have a biochemical basis. Plainly
understanding the biochemistry of transcendant experiences such as
those which propelled Christ, Mohammed and Buddah, may be of benefit.
Surely once this is well understood, psychologists and others will use
them to bring about desirable changes in personality and open us to
direct experience of the divine - if such is possible. Grassman
believes we have already achieved this understanding with DMT.

The use of ketamine and ecstasy also is reported to have similar
effects

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methylenedioxymethamphetamine
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ketamine

Clearly with a sound understanding of the psychological and physical
effects of these drugs, or more powerful future variants, it isn't a
stretch to believe that some future culture may use them ceremonially
to induce a common experience of the divine as part of a new sort of
religion much as teonanácatl has been used in the past (and today).

Just because it 'feels good' doesn't mean that the HEAD IS
GROWING IN THE SAME PROPORTION as the rest of the body!

So? That has nothing to do with what I've said.

Edgar Mitchell had an experience of the transcendant on his return from
the Moon aboard Apollo 14. E + K (ecstasy and ketamine) taken in the
right proportion and the right time lead to visions of angels or aliens
- as you prefer. And those entities speak with you. (according to
reports I've heard) revealing hidden knowledge.

These drugs are available in Switzerland with a prescription from you
therapist - medical grade. Not street drugs. It is rumored that NASA
uses these aboard MIR and the space station partly to experiment with
alien contact and partly to understand the experience of astronauts
like Edgar Mithcell.

I was thinking it would be very cool to write a murder mystery where
the Colombo like character stumbles upon the use of these drugs by NASA
- and stumbles upon a whole program - like the remote viewing program
of the CIA - within NASA that attempts to communicate with aliens by
drug induced hallucinations!

The discoverer of ketamine spent the last three years of his life in a
sensory deprivation tank strung out on this drug BECAUSE he thought he
was communicating with a larger intelligence. He actually patented
things based on his hallucinations (so called). I can imagine this
being taken up by NASA, following the mental breakdown of Aldrin and
the 'ravings' of Mitchell, and the 'success' of McDonagle in the CIA.
Sometime around the Carter Administration I would imagine. A
Presidential order would establish it. I can see Carter - a baptist
minister - and nuclear scientist - being persuaded to approve such a
program of 'inner discovery' - lol.

Remember who they are communicating with by injesting the
'prescribed quantities' of these drugs - they are CROSSBREEDING
with SPIRITUAL DARKNESS

Bull***

- depriving themselves of a promise
given long ago, not only here on Earth, but anywhere there is a
G2V sun shining in the cosmos!

I didn't know the Holy Bible mentioned the Hertzsprung Russel diagram.
