crew was transmitting from their big radome because my spectrum
scanner, a good half mile away, would pick up spikes as it
swept along the detecting phosphor. Not that the Army types could
tell when they were going to be doing this so we could plan around
it, but they couldn't hide it in progress).
In San Diego, when one of the larger military ships comes into harbor,
you can sometimes hear your stereo go "Bzt" periodically as the beam
crosses it. Even when it's turned off!
