Eric, your paranoid delusions aren't even new. I remember clear back
in the '60s when there was great angst about 'EuroDollars' and the
quantity of them floating about and what would happen if they all came
home to roost. Ten and fifteen years later there was much crying in
the same vein about 'PetroDollars'.

Think it through, Eric. What happens when oil contracts start being
paid in euros? Take it slow. What effects occur when these 'excess'
dollars start to come out?

Hint: They don't "maintain reserves in order to buy oil". Currency
reserves are kept for other reasons.

:> were in no mood for a third whipping when we took over top status".
:
:Yep. When was that Freddy? When did US $'s replace British pounds
:sterling?

Except for a brief period when Britain dropped off the gold standard
(1931-1945), it didn't much matter what currency you held. After all,
they were all fixed to a given quantity of gold. When that collapsed
in the early '70s, the dollar became the de facto currency (because
there were so many of them in circulation throughout the world and
because our economy was so large).

I guess you could say that the British pound lost its supremacy in the
early part of the 20th century and things were mixed until the 1970's,
where the US dollar took over.

:> You immediately follow that with "the UK would be the first to join up
:> with the EU, not as a member per se but as an ally, if the term
:> petroeuro took over petrodollar".
:
:Yep. The UK has the advantage of not being $-based nor euro-based, so
:if an economic conflict occurred the UK could simply align itself with
:the victor. Nice safe place.

Your reasoning here is rather like saying that the ideal place to be
in a head on collision is between the two cars.

Really stupid.

The euro is actually causing economic problems for some member
nations. Once you understand why, you'll understand why Britain
doesn't want to join EMU (not the EU, which it has been a member of
for years).

:> You don't see the contradiction there?
:
:If the petrodollar was NOT replaced with petroeuro, then the UK stays
:pat, aligned with us as they have been. What part don't you get,
:Freddy?

And if it does, they still do. Their reasons for not joining the EMU
have nothing to do with your pet issue. What part don't you get, El
Chimpko?

:> Oh, and just by the way, the UK ***IS ALREADY A MEMBER OF THE EU***.
:
:Okay, okay, cripes, eurozone. Is the UK part of the eurozone?

Not currently, but the reasons have nothing to do with your loony
petro issues. Note that Denmark and Sweden aren't members, either.

:> I guess that sort of obviates your "join up with the EU, not as a member
:> per se", since they've BEEN a member for years.
:
:If petrodollar is replaced with petroeuro, then the UK will drop
:pounds and adopt the euro. My prediction.

I'd suggest you might want to look at Britain's actual reasons for not
joining the EMU at this time. 'Petroleum' doesn't appear at all (and
Britain gets most of its petroleum from the North Sea fields in any
case, so doesn't pay 'dollars' for it anyhow).
