Some people already believe that. But the group of people
holding that belief are a diverse lot. It would be difficult to
construct a cohesive meme they could all devote themselves to.
It would also be nice if such a meme had some survival value.
What survival value did other religions have that this one wouldn't?
Other religions have memes such as "believe in me or you'll burn in
eternal fire," which is obviously good for the survival of the meme.
(Usually coupled with promises of eternal happiness, virgins, etc. for
those who do believe.) They often also come with "it is your duty to
make others believe in me too (else see aforementioned fire)" which is
good for helping the meme spread.
A simple belief that (1) life is of intrinsic value, and (2) if
anything's going to spread life to the rest of the galaxy, it may have
to be us, doesn't really have either of these qualities. And that's why
it's not a religion, but more of a philosophy.
