What survival value did other religions have that this one

Other religions didn't have an obligation to "go to other
planets to find extra-terrestrial life".

Going upthread from Sylvia's quoted post:

Sylvia: Seems to me that no credible probe could deliver results within a human lifetime of its launch. I cannot see any government being willing to fund such an enterprise even if it became technically feasible.

Rand: Also note that there have been other projects, such as cathedrals,
that took more than a human lifetime to complete.

Sylvia: Ah, yes - religious motives.

And I should've snipped the "to find extra-terrestial life" as I wouldn't give even odds that extra-terrestial life exists. I might give a little commitment to such searches (I've made small donations to SETI).

However, a genuine effort to spread earth's life throughout our solar system and beyond, _that_ I'd support with a much larger commitment of time, energy and money.

I can't explain why I believe life is sacred and that it's our duty to spread it. But I do hold that belief, quite strongly. I guess you could call it an article of faith.

As to survival value, we have less chance of surviving if all our eggs are in the same basket.
