Exactly! A grand purpose is worth the effort. The larger and more
ambitious the goal, the greater chance for success. Provided every
aspect of the goal stretches, but doesn't break, the realm of
possibility. And can be accomplished within a couple of
political cycles.

Well this particular problem will have to be sorted out in a single two
term presidential cycle because we are already at the point of no return
right now. We need a suite of all liquid shuttle replacements by 2010

I'm starting to believe the military will be the ones building
all the space infrastructure. They haven't been wasting their
time, have lots more money and are very motivated.
Looking back, military technology and surplus planes
sure came in handy with starting up commercial aviation.

Why should it be much different with commercializing space?

The thing that keeps bugging me about that Chinese asat test
is that in a war our enemy will simply toss so much debris
into space that low earth orbits will be useless for everyone.
And in orbit any hardware is vulnerable to boot.

Sub orbital can deliver troops and warheads just fine right?
I bet the military will end up taking over the winner of the
sub orbital passenger competition. And turns the best
design into a troop carrier.
