I haven't read (yet) "The First Space Race?"
However, I did take time to read the excellent
excerpt form your web site. Lots of familiar
names, including some friends.
I was not at the launch. However, as a National
Academy of Science staffer, I had been secretary
for both Pickering's and Van Allens Working Groups.
Accordingly, I was in the back room at the Academy,
when von Braun came in. I remember quipping to
von Braun: "By Jupiter, you did it." However, I'm
not sure he heard me above all of the other
hullabaloo--at least he didn't seem to react.
