Re: Space shuttle cloak?

Sheesh, can't NASA come up with some kind of detachable, desposable cloak or
shield for the shuttle to protect it from frozen "foam" ice from hitting
during launch?
What's it made of, Ken? Is it strong enough that it doesn't turn into
flying shreds itself? Sleek enough that it doesn't mung up the
aerodynamics in the first few minutes, and can be magically "detached
or desposed" shed as the stack goes supersonic and then hypersonic?
Light enough that it doesn't take too big a bite from payload?
You *do* know the masses and forces involved, right? And the range of
properties available in real engineering materials?
Because... sheesh, it would be really silly to wail "can't they come
up with something..?" if you didn't..
