I think we are talking a little bit at cross puposes on Iraq. I am
critical of US policy but that is NOT the point I was tying to make.
In the Sunday Times today there was an article about suicide bombers
and what motivates them. One point, unlike other criminals they are
not low lifers. They are middle class and intellecually convinced of
the rightness of what they are doing.
Their target is not Americans. I can understand someone fighting. I
can understand why you Americans fought against George III. No, the
target is Shiites, it is also civilians who are cast as sinners. This
is also apparent in Amerioca. After 9/11 both Pat Robertson and Jerry
Falwell said America deserved it. Ponder this, it is a short step from
"America deserved it" to "We must use our bodies to ensure America
(and Iraqi civilians) get their just desserts."
Oil etc. and economic movives are fundamentally healthy. In some
senses GWB is to be condemed more for his attitudes on religious
fundamentalism - Intelligent Design and abstinance only sexual heath
than over Iraq. This is a minority liberal view. I hope you see where
I am coming from - Religious fundamentally identifies him with the
ideaology of the mayhem.
In earlier posting I drew the distiction between organized religion
and belief in God. The Appollo astronauts did indeed experience a
numinous feeling. This is NOT the same thing as orgainized religion,
which is about right thinking (I hate right thinkers) and above all
punishment. This punishment is meeted out in a very arbitary way. Take
the people in the twin towers and Iraqis in a market. A lot, if not
most, will be living blameless lives, at least in their own terms.
Some will be gay, some will have had a large number of sexual
partners. Not that mant though by proportion, yet they must all die to
appease the wrath of some old testament Allah.
The proposal was not for people to have the Apollo experience, but to
have people like the "Pilgrim Fathers" they went to America because
James I could not stand them. The Thirty Years War (I think there will
be war in Iraq for probably 30 years - 2033 war began 2003) was on at
the time. James was skilful in staying out of it. His daughter married
a Bohemian prnce and he was asked to provide a force to get his throne
back. The US presence won't last ant longer than the next election.
America deserves an impact with Ceres - so do all sinners elsewhere.
Ponder that fact. This is what you are up against.
BTW - In Buddhist terms a nirvana with 72 houris shows that the basic
desires of the martyrs is no different from the most promiscuous of
those in the twin towers. This is one thing that does not twig.
On the question of effect of impacts. This very much depends on the
material and the nature of the shiock waves.
