On Tue, 30 Oct 2007 11:16:37 -0600, in a place far, far away, Joe
Strout <joe@xxxxxxxxxx> made the phosphor on my monitor glow in such a
way as to indicate that:
Well, what can I say, except to vote for a strong fiscally conservative
candidate next year... which these days, usually means a Democrat.
That's a joke, right?
Nope. For the last 30 years or so, we have:
Carter (D): reduced the national debt as compared to GDP
Bush (R): increased the debt
Regan (R): increased the debt
Clinton (D): reduced the debt
Bush (R): increased the debt (in fact broke all deficit records)
Why do you have the absurd belief that the president is responsible
for the state of the debt, and that Congress plays no role?
Of course Congress plays a role, but so does the Administration, and the
clear correlation here is with the Administration in power. (And, BTW,
Bush II enjoyed a firmly Republican-controlled Congress as well while
running up the debt to record highs, so you can't blame it on a
Democratic Congress either.)
I didn't say that Bush wasn't a big spender. Bush isn't even a
conservative, by many measures. I am simply disputing your
simple-minded and nutty notion that Democrats in general are more
likely than Republicans to be fiscally conservative. Only someone
posting from an alternate universe could believe such a thing. Unless
by "fiscally conservative" you mean dramatically increasing both taxes
and spending.
I am not now, and have never have been, a Republican. I've only voted
for a Republican for president once in my life. I simply think that
the notion that a Democrat will be fiscally responsible is insane.
I can only guess that you've only voted for any president once in your
life (or, you've been voting for even more right-wing third-party
candidates).
I vote(d) mostly libertarian. Or did until they went nuts after
September 11. In 2000 I voted for Ralph Nader. I didn't vote in
2004.
Your responses here have been clear for years: anything
done by a Republican administration is good, anything done by a Democrat
is bad, a
Horse***. I've had many complaints about Republicans (and Bush).
Just because I defend Bush against lunatic charges against him doesn't
mean that I think he's without fault. I can't help it if you have a
selective memory.
