Apparently, there's quite a lot of it. I can't help wondering about the
economonics of scooping it up, drying it and using it as fuel.
biology. The Israelis are growing algae in PURE CO2, and then
extracting oil. The algae are (probably) genetically engineered. Where
solar energy is abundant the limiting factor for the gwoth of plants -
including algae is transport of CO2. Given pure CO2 solar power can be
extracted with quite a high efficiency.
Ordinary multicellular plants have this problem. Opening the
chloroplasts lets in CO2 but also leads to water loss. A plant has to
compromise. I sometimes wonder whether a solution for arid regions
(Israel is arid) would not be to grow plants with a high level of CO2
under cover.
I am following with interest the thread on Buzz Aldrin's plans for
space based solar power. Needless to say the technology will have to
compete with others. For myself my money is on a biological solution.
