Re: Why a Delta-4H for DSP?

The DSP-23 satellite, from all the sources I've read, weighs about 2.5
tonnes. Why did it need a Delta-4 Heavy to launch it to GEO, when
something like the Skynet 5 satellite, of twice the weight, was
happily launched into GEO on an Ariane 5 with space for a commercial
payload to go along?
It was a direct insertion of a payload without an apogee kick stage.
Plus, they needed to demonstrate that capability.
That's why they built it, remember?
Can you imagine the Air Force asking the ESA for launch capability?
The AF is always interested in new and innovative rockets. Got any?
