If Bush's successor were to scrap the VSE and Ares V and confine Orion
to LEO, you'll need a booster for that application anyway. Which
brings us back to Ares 1 (or something with Ares 1's capability).

Again, why? ....

Because it will be hard to justify to the people who hold the purse
trings to justify the use of a big rocket when a smaller one will do.
And given that the current proposal for using Orion to resupply ISS is
to use an unmanned capsule, you don't need the full sized booster.

You don't like the stick, it would make more sense to take the second
stage and design a liquid fuled first stage to fill the place of the
SRB.

Actually, I don't want to see NASA develop *any* shuttle derived launch
vehicles since I think they should be buying commercial launches instead.
But if NASA must have its own launch vehicles, I think it ought to get one,
not two, especially when Ares I payload to LEO is very close to the that of
a Delta IV Heavy or Atlas V Heavy.

I really dislike the five segment SRB's. SRB's are bad enough, but adding a
segment makes them an all new stage with a whole new set of problems to
solve.
