Those were studies; with Ares 1, now they have to actually build it.
They decided J2-X is a better option, and I'd like to think that a
bunch of ROCKET SCIENTISTS would be able to crunch the numbers and
figure out that yes, this engine will work. It is their area of
expertise, after all.
