Economically, It didn't work for phones.  And there are technical
issues

Space Solar Power iis not viable.  It will cause more pollution in its
construction and deployment

as for tangible there are comsats.

Comsats are now accepted. WiFi is in many ways simply a more
sophisticated comsat. WiFi is a necessary intermediate stage for SSP
as well. The fact that panels are made by printing onto thin polymer
sheets (order of 80g/m^2) gives us pause for thought. We should, of
course, go for terrestrial solar power, but is that ultimately the
best answer.

What I think we need to do in the short term is build a fragmented
comsat, a comsat consisting of pebbles which would have a much sharper
more steerable beam and which would support a number of circuits
separated only geographically. This would in many ways be a natural
evolution of the comsat.

There is also the political aspects of censorship. If you are
translating into Arabic you have just one website Google Translate.
All other websites come through GT. Many users in the Middle East are
complaining that they cannot use this facility because GT is blocked.
A super comsat will allow serving to be done well away from the
country or origin.
