:
:I have, the DC-X would have used the thickness of Earth´s athmosphere
:to slow down below supersonic, i.e. using its heatshield, after which
:landing on a torch would have worked fine.
:
Uh, not quite. In many of the design studies the engine gas flow WAS
the 'heat shield'.
:
:But that won´t work with a Martian landing, because A) It´s not thick
:enough that we can land like on Earth, i.e. bring the craft beneath
:supersonic on the friction due to the heatshield alone, B)Yet it´s to
:thick that we can land like on the Moon, i.e. with retrorockets only.
:
No, it's not. You just have to carry more fuel. The rest is
engineering.
:
:We have to invent new way of landing, in order to land on Mars. A
:hypercone is the idea for a solution to that problem, i.e. the problem
:of getting the thing below supersonic airspeeds before applying the
:landing rockets.
:
But it's an unnecessary solution. It is ONE APPROACH. It's not
required.
