There is only one route to $50. The market driven route. $100 is the
market price. This is based on Asian consumption. There is indeed more
oil now than there was when the price was $3, but there is a far far
bigger consuming market. As I keep saying the fastest growing sector
is Asia.
Rand seems to think cheaper oil is right around the corner. He has no
basis for his belief other than it flys in the face of those who see
oil as a finite resource. But since the end of oil will most likely
happen after he is dead then why should he worry.
$50 - You need
1) Nuclear power (peaceful)
Chernobyl, Three Mile Island.
Nuclear power has to be safe - true. Chernoyl could not occur in a
modern reactor as it depended on a positive voiding coefficient. Three
mile island, this too can be prevented with good design.

2) More efficient energy use.
Like the Japanese. It will be the job of the next and future
presidents as Bush like pushing his repsonsibility to future
presidents.
3) Most important solar power and a hydrogen economy. Progress has
already been made. The latest cells will recover their cost in a sunny
environment in a year or so.
Hydrogen can be used on its own or to produce oil from coal.
I had not heard of that. Do you have a citation for that? I'd like to
read up on it.
SASOL did it since South Africa was sanctioned during the Apartheid
era. It becomes more economic if you have a non coal based source of
hydrogen. SASOL raw material is water not hydrogen. Hydrogen has to be
manufactured.
There is a cloud on the horizon if we have large numbers of fuel cell
driven vehicles and that is the shortage of platinoids for catalysts.
Its OK for celebraties to drive "green" cars which might not be quite
so green if everyone were driving them.
We need a rational global space policy. We need a rational global
energy policy. The two are or course linked. I feel certain
individuals are in a state of denial about both. This is hampering
discussion.
In the words of Victor Hugo, "There is nothing more powerful than an
idea whose time has come."
Right now alternate sources of energy fit that quote.
Also, the quote by Plato, also used by Hugo, "Necessity is the mother
of invention", comes to mind.
So, stop worrying about the pros and cons as the need will be stronger
than opinions.
I am not that worried about solar power. I am just a little bit
worried about the shortfall in platinoids which could take us by
surprise.
