Could I ask you a question, a simple English question. What does the

What a bizarre, non sequitur question.
I'm working under the assumption that poor Ian is suffering from some form
of dementia or ADHD that impairs his ability to present ideas in a more consistent stream. There's no profit in making fun of him for his
disability but you might be able work around it if you keep it in mind.
No, it's really not possible to "work around it." There is no
"profit" in trying to carry on a discussion with him at all.
And yet, you keep replying to him.

"Replying to him" != "having a discussion with him." And I rarely do
so. I ignore most of his posts.

Usually (though admittedly not in this case), the only time I respond
to him is to disabuse others of his latest fantasy about me. If he'd
stop taking my name in vain I'd just killfile him. I probably will
anyway.

You should. It is just a compulsive thing with him. He replies to people who reply to him. He used to do the same thing to me. He hasn't done it since I killfiled him.

Of course, I'll also probably abandon Usenet completely, eventually,
as so many others seem to have.

As useless as I think Usenet has become, I probably won't abandon it entirely, though it is obvious my posting rate is a lot lower than it used to be and will probably never go back up again. With the proper use of killfiles against both people and threads, the S/N becomes manageable. Most of the remaining noise I see comes from people I don't want to killfile making useless replies to people already in my killfile.
