I think that the American people should direct their anger at what
Reagan et al. did during the Cold War.

That's going to be a tough sell.

Reagan won that one, so that today the people of Hungary,
Czechoslovakia, Estonia, and the like are living in freedom rather
than under a wretched dictatorship.

As for OBL in Afghanistan, how is the ingratitude of Osama bin Laden
Reagan's fault? The evil of the Soviet Union limited our choices of
allies, so if the Cold War left messes around, our anger would be
directed at Russia. Which, in re Kosovo, still seems to want to differ
from the United States for no good reason.

In politics gratitude is not something that should be expected. I also
feel that it is rubbish to suppose that freedom in E Europe depended
on the support given to reactionary and repressive régimes. Indeed it
could be arued that the appeal of the Soviet Union rested in large
measure on the reactionary nature of the alternatives.

In Latin America we have a situation which is similar in some respects
but different as to outcome. The US supported a whole string of
military dictatorships. These are no longer in power. There is still
resentment felt in the continent for the way they have been treated.
In NO WAY did events in Latin America influence those in Europe.
Indeed if the US had supported a measure of democracy and land reform,
not only would there be no Castro or Chavez but Communism would have
found it difficult to make any real headway.

Do you seriously expect a reactionary misogynist to be GRATEFUL?
Personally I expct little gratitude in politics, from anyone.
Personally if the alternative to Communism was the Taliban, I would
take Communism any day of the week. So would most people.

I believe the future in the Middle East lies in getting rid of
reactionary régimes and reactionary groups within countries. The US I
feel is the problem not the solution.
