Oddly enough - that includes things that are goverment only activities
with only external competition.  (Like warships.)

On the gripping hand, competition hasn't controlled health care costs

That's because there's a major disconnect in the market between the
provider and the consumer.  Health insurance has been a disaster since
the government rigged the tax system so that you can only get the
deduction for it if you're an employer.

I don't really know how the US health care systems works (or doesn't
work). But if the employer gets the deduction, presumably he, not the
beneficiary, is the consumer. Doesn't the employer have an incentive
to shop around to control health care costs?

Yes, but he doesn't have the incentive to shop around for good health
care...

That is left to the employee.

Rand is upset that as a consultant that does not work for an employer
(corporation) per se, he must pay for his own health care. Whereas the
system really does make it easier for people that are employees to get
health care as compared to consultants. I have heard this before from
friends that are consultants.
