While not exactly breaking news, the above could derail plans to
colonize other planets, often used as an excuse to ignore Earthly
limits and trash the "local" environment. You people know who you are.
Imagine ditching those Star Trek dreams and being forced to respect
the limits of our only sure home. Growth-addicts would have to admit
that endless population growth and economic growth are indeed
cancerous.
Getting a breeding colony off the Earth before the Sun dies (if we're
still even around) is a noble goal, but exporting the bulk of our
existing population problem is impractical and immoral.
