Eight years, fiftysix days

Today is not only the pheonix lander's do or die moment in history but
the 47th anniversary of Kennedy's 'land a man on the moon' speech,
which was accomplished 8yrs and 56 days later, with two men.
Much of the rest of his speech concerned unmanned exploration in
preparation, communication and weather satellites.
In much the same way, it might be a politically astute move to propose
a project to evaluate the economic viability of building a space solar
power plant. The 'two grand kilogram' gold standard to leo, the quest
for ice on the moon, mars and asteroids- more valuable than diamonds
as a resource, or 'the largest structure ever built', that might mass
under 100 tons, could make for a stirring speech in the context of a
long term solution to peak oil and global warming.
'We will know in eight' years makes a nice timeframe for a president
who hopes to be reelected.
I also want to apologise to Mr. Flannery for suggesting his MHD idea
was perpetual motion. If there were only some way to extract energy
from the heat of the rocket exhaust to increase thrust...I just don't
think there is.
