NASA Directs Contractor To Adopt Ares and Orion Launch Date Postponementshttp://www.spaceref.com/news/viewnews.html?id=1295

Update programmatic milestone dates to the following:
Preliminary Design Review (PDR) Board   11/21/08
Critical Design Review (CDR) Board   10/08/10
      AA-1 Test Flight*   02/26/10
      AA-2 Test Flight*   06/28/11
      PA-2 Test Flight   04/05/12
      Ares 1-Y Sub-orbital Test Flight   09/01/13
CEV Block 1A Design Certification Review (DCR)   01/18/14
Orion 1 Orbital Test Fight   03/01/14
Orion Crewed flight to ISS, ATLAS-1 to ISS   09/01/14

So Orion doesn't start orbital flights until 2014, which is *eight* years
from now.  Yikes!

I hope Congress starts waking up and realizing how much time and money NASA
is blowing on Ares I development.  I've got to believe that flying Orion on
EELV's would free up money to speed up Orion development.

I have been told I am a member of the Einstein cult. The way to avoid
the problem is to dig out the Saturn C5 and rejig the Moon landings so
that 2 loads relplace one. It should not be too difficult. Let one
Saturn put a partialled fuelled rocket into LEO. Let another fill it
with fuel, then go off to the Moon or somewhere.

I am told the Saturn drawings are still there.

So what.  It doesn't mean it can be built.  Many of the suppliers are
gone, parts are not being made anymore, processes are outdated.  Just
like the model T, it can't be built as the original but a replica can
be made.  The drawings would have to be re engineered to build the
replica, which would be the same as engineering a new vehicle- Hide quoted text -

One would have thought that as techniology is better now than then it
could be recreated. OK the electronics will need a revamp. This will
serve to make then lighter and more accurate. OK we give Saturn a
modern guidance system. We can use things like GPS if we want to. Our
inertial systems are smaller and more accurate. This should all make
it easier to rebuild. The "blood and guts" parts of Saturn though seem
better than anything made today. One might wonder why. Is Ares too
complex?
