I wasn't overly surprised that it failed. Their whole song and dance
about how Flight No.2 was *really* a success (despite dumping its
payload into the Pacific) suggested that they were living in la-la
land and badly underestimating the difficulty of achieving orbit.
Clever PR, a rich owner, and throngs of Kool-Aid drinking internet
supporters do not a successful space launch vehicle make.
I wish them well, I really do, but I had low expectations of them, and
I see no reason to change them yet.
At least they're flying hardware and learning from their failures. I have
more faith in their approach than NASA's approach with Ares I. That thing
is an overly complicated dog, even ignoring the finer points like fuel slosh
and stage separation issues, which is what Space-X is getting hung up on.
