The radiation level on Earth is 1 millirad per day.
The radiation level on Mars - unsheilded - is 8 millirad per day
The radiation level in interplanetary space - unsheilded - is 22
millirad per day
Exposure to early explorers to Mars on a two year journey is less than
12.4 rads - equivalent to 40 years exposure on Earth.- mostly in the
interplanetary segment.
Radiation is a factor, it is not a show stopper.
Larger ships, will have sheilding.-both active and passive
Faster ships - will limit exposure times
Larger Martian installations will have sheilding - mostly passive
Which tell us that the importance of this factor as Mars develops will
decline over time.
So, its even less of an issue later.
