Where do people get this idea that deficit spending by the government
causes recession? My sister (politically pretty left) came out with
this same howler.

Hint: Deficit spending STIMULATES the economy. It HELPS with
recessions. Take a look at the deficit run up during WWII, which
brought us out of the Great Depression.
