Re: Using decomissioned satellites

Was just reading about an old satellite in GEO that has been
decomissioned and is being moved to a higher orbit. It is still
operational but they think it will fail soon as it is far beyond its
lifespan. However, there are many other old satellites that have been
decomissioned and others that failed to reach proper orbit but may be
potentially operable for something. Does anybody use these old
satellites? Would it be possible to start a business to somehow use
them?

I think this is a really good idea. Seems to me, today's
state of the art is far beyond beginning stage; and the
comm satellites that big businesses are putting up there
could well have a second career built-in. (If the military
is there already, I'm not surprised. But I'm talking about
something *constructive*.) Observations of interesting
stars comes to mind; observation of Luna and of Terra's
atmosphere (which concerns us more than we are properly
tending to). How about a communications network set there
for beginners and students? By the time these commercial
satellites have aged out they've well paid their way; it is
time for them to do something of a more general benefit, so
I really really like this idea. The questions are,

1) what are the options;

2) how do we make this happen? ??
