The part that is "urban legend" is that this was what caused the other
candidate to be defeated in the election. Also, the versions of what was
said seem to change over the years.
I read that the winning candidate (A Republican I believe) accused his
opponent of practicing monogamy for years and that the candidates
sister was a thespian in New York.
Yes, something of this nature did happen and the media picked up
on it immediately. By the time the election was held everyone in
Florida should have been aware of the joke.
