I can think of several possibilities. Long term storage could be done at
Edwards (Columbia had been rolled into a hanger there after STS-1), and
there is a Mate/Demate rig there as well. There is also the Palmdale Plant
No. 42 facility not far from there, which also has the former portable
Orbiter Lifting Facility (OLF). And there is also the possibility of
storing at least one orbiter temporarily at Davis Monthan AFB's Aerospace
Maintenance and Regeration Center (AMARC) out here near Tucson, Arizona.
At least the weather is clear and dry most of the year.
