New NASA Boss Pushes to Replace Shuttle

New NASA Boss Pushes for Faster Shuttle Replacement, May Cut Research
to Pay for It

By MARCIA DUNN
The Associated Press

May. 12, 2005 - NASA's new boss made an impassioned case Thursday for
speeding up development of a new spacecraft so that the United States
will not lose access to space when the shuttle is retired, but warned
something else will have to be sacrificed.

Administrator Michael Griffin told a Senate subcommittee in Washington
that to cover the cost of the shuttle replacement's accelerated debut,
he may be forced to delay some space station and exploration research.

I don't think it is unreasonable to delay/cancel, at least some, of the research that is facing the chop to speed up development of a replacement for the shuttle.

For one thing I cannot see the point of spending millions to look for
planets in other galaxies, when we don't even, currently, have a ship
capable of putting men on our own moon.

I think you mean "other solar systems".
Actually, I think you'll find that
a) there is more public interest in looking for planets like Earth than doing something they did 35 years ago. No-one's been back because there is nothing worth going for.
b) the total budget for unmanned spaceflight would probably not pay for more than a couple of shuttle missions. They are currently talking about closing down Voyager and Ulysses (which isn't even wholly American) to save a few million. Meanwhile, the Triana boondoggle eats money in some storeroom, AFAIK.
