There are always glitches. These are very, very complex
machines with millions of parts and tons of software. The
whole process of creating and following mission rules is
designed to deal with this situation and create a process
for creating order from this chaos. In fact, the countdown
has holds built into it to catch up in the event that some
troubleshooting has to go on. To get some more background
on this, take a read of Gene Kranz's book. You will get
the scoop on some of the problems that NASA worked over the
years that may have never made the evening news.
