I don't think that's why because open source converters for some file
formats
suck without reason and despite there being known good
reversed-engineered
format specs out there. Probably more like people who go through the
trouble
of making converters prefer to charge big money to sell shrink wrapped
commercial converters or similar rather than give it away. You can find
a lot
of good converters that cost money, but very few that are free.
