That's one reason NASA is baselining an EOR approach this time around.
The mission module for a Mars mission will necessarily be much larger
than the CEV capsule itself. An EOR approach allows launching the crew
on one vehicle (CEV + Stick) and allowing the larger, heavier
mission-specific modules to be launched on the SDHLV. This would
undoubted include a large cruse-phase habitat, lander vehicle, and
trans-Mars/trans-Earth propulson stage(s). In fact, a Mars mission
will probably end up requiring at least two SDHLV launches, perhaps
more.
