Griffin was probably under pressure not to have another accident when
decisions were made to "take a step backward" to capsules and
parachutes.
Thousands of americans have died in wars. Thousands of americans have
died to explore and develop the United States. And, thousands are
destined to die exploring and developing Outer Space. Wars and
Exploration are a dangerous business.
I feel for the families of the Astronauts. They are brave men and
women. But we can't "take a step backward" because of an accident . .
.. or two, or three. Outer Space is the "Final Frontier". It will
claim many, many lives over the next century.
America's engineers are the best in the world. Rockets, space
equipment, and life support systems are as safe as can be asked given
the extremes of technology required. The Shuttle's tile system was the
beginning of that technology. It pushed the envelope.
America will move forward as it always has. Engineers in the Private
Sector are hard at work to improve the 'air friction' problems of
hypersonic space vehicles. Regardless of what NASA does, Outer Space
is now wide open. It is the new klondike gold mine where daring
individuals will go.
New energy resources, materials, and Alien Contact await us. Take
carbon fiber, mix it with graphite epoxy, add a SSME or two -- and off
we go!
