Today the weather appeared to be clearing up and trending towards
favorable conditions, so they gave the go-ahead to come back. However
15 min. before landing they decide to switch the direction they're
landing, because showers popped up on the approach end of runway 33.
Should this have worried anyone concerned?? I mean, it wasn't a major
catastrophe, but still, usually they have better feel for the weather
than that, don't they?
What if it had turned into more of a thunderstorm, of what if
crosswinds had increased past limits? I know waiting for the perfect
day is impossible but it just seems normally there's no weather
anywhere..werent those showers well w/in the 30-mile limit??
The limits are very conservative, I'm sure they could have easily used 33 if
they had really had to, even flying through the odd shower. And after the
de-orbit burn, they're coming down, like it or not:)
It was nice to see how smoothly the runway heading switch was handled - does
anyone know if it has happened before at such a late stage?
