I understand the crew died a lot in simulations during Apollo. In
shuttle today the instructors are basically not allowed to push the
limits to the point failure happens sometimes.
Things have changed since your SMS control/prop days, Danny. :-) The ascent
sims have more hairy contingency abort cases and there are generic orbit
"Major Case" sims that exercise the nasty cabin leak/loss of freon
loops/loss of H2O loops cases. Since the Columbia accident, multi-day MMT
simulations have been added to the flight-specific integrated sim template.
The MER participates in these sims as well.
