Was it on the Gemini flights that they manoeuvred in their very basic
craft to within a couple of feet of each other? If they could do that
back in the 60's then why not send a Soyuz up, the cosmonaut opens
hatch and leans out, opens the airlock hatch on the shuttle, throws
the LiOH canisters into the airlock, along with a few essential
supplies like food. Closes the hatch and goes home. The Shuttle crew
then retrieve the items and bed down for the rescue flight.

Soyuz could not have reached Columbia. The minimum inclination for a Soyuz
launch from Baikonur is 51.6 degrees, and Columbia was at 39 degrees.
