Re: new astronauts?

On a similar subject, the long duration folk who fly on the station,
presumably get a bigger dose of radiation than those who fly only on the
shuttle, so do they have restrictions on how many months cumulatively, they
can be on orbit?

@j72g2000cwa.googlegroups.com:

Are all the astronauts who'll fly the remaining shuttle flights already
in the program, or will another class be selected?
Or will the next class selected in the future be for the
next-generation of space travel only?

The latter. The next class will probably arrive in 2008 and will get, at
most, "overview-level" shuttle training. It's not even a given that all
the
2004 class will get shuttle flights. If both contingency logistics flights
happen, then both 2004 PLTs will get to fly, assuming that NASA continues
to fly PLTs one time before promoting them to CDR. For the MSes, it
depends
on how many rookies fly each mission. Right now it looks like NASA will
continue the practice of putting one veteran on each EVA team, which will
allow at least two rookies per flight. Since they have already started
assigning members of the 2000 class (10 MSes), it seems a fairly safe bet
that at least some of the six MSes from the 2004 class will get to fly.
