This event happened in Alabama as a bridge collapsed under the
train as it was crossing. Both engines, a passenger car carrying
employees monitoring the cargo, and several rocket segments
have derailed. One booster segment, which is loaded with solid
propellant, detached from the flat car and is on the ground.
The segment appears to be in a shipping container. Its flight
integrity is probably compromised, meaning that the matching
segment cannot be used (segments are cast in pairs to ensure
balanced thrust during flight). This will have an unknown effect
on Shuttle missions later this year or next; NASA is assessing
the situation. This may be the first serious train incident
involving Shuttle booster segments in the history of the program.
There are injuries, one reported to be serious. CNN has video and
the story should be in general circulation by now.
