It shows that it is stupid to scale down maintenance and refurbishement of a working vehicle until you have a working replacement vehicle.

And NASA has had plenty of experience so far at attempts to replace the Shuttle failing, forcing NASA to extent the shuttle's life.

The current scheme is no different except that a whole bunch of idiots at NASA and in government approved/supported the idea of beginning an irresversible shuttle stand down even before any metal was bent for a prototype that is likely to never fly.

Perhaps it is as silly as property developpers having their eyes on KSC and its incredible development opportunities for retirement resorts and it is to their advantages to see NASA stuck in a cul de sac that will result in the permanent shutdown of manned space travel for the USA, thus freeing all this land for development.
