I think as the missions were only supposed to last three months, nobody envisaged having the problem they have now. Besides, the
generators you mention are really only suited to remote space locations, and I do not think you would want them irradiating the
Martian landscape for years to come.

The next rover they're sending to Mars will use RTGs, surface mission duration of one martian year (two earth years.) Just think, if
they build the next rover as well as the current ones, it could last ten years! It could still be going when a couple of sample
return missions have come and gone - in fact the news is Nasa wants to use the next rover to collect samples for the very first
return mission.
