When I got my new washer and dryer from Sears. The guys who delivered
them came on the same truck as the washer and dryer and they carried
it upstairs and installed them for me. They hooked up the power and
the water lines on the washer, and the power and vent line on the
dryer.
Sound familiar? That's what the Shuttle does for the Space Station.
Except for things like the early ammonia servicing system, which was simply
tossed overboard. If you don't want the items back for analysis or repair,
you don't really *need* to return them to earth.
Items that the shuttle delivers and returns to earth were designed that way
because they assumed the shuttle would always be there, not necessarily
because all ISS components *need* to be designed for earth return.
Note that even when it was assumed that the shuttle would be flying
"forever", no one seriously thought to return all ISS components to earth
when the ISS program was completed and the station needed to be abandoned.
That would obviously cost too much and would be risky considering all of the
EVA's required to pull things apart and store them in the payload bay.
As far as I know, the only return to earth option being seriously considered
for ISS is pretty much the same one that was used for Mir.
