It's not clear what idea you're suggesting he came up with.

However, there are no ablative tiles (that I'm aware of) on the shuttle.
That would be counter the design of tiles on the Shuttles.

There are a few spots in the wheel wells where ablative
coverings are used on the Shuttle -- just too hard to make a tile that
fits those spots

Such as? Again, I don't recall any such spots. The wheel wells are covered
by doors that use the normal tiles.

-- but so far as I know the only thing that Feynman
had anything noteworthy to do with was bringing up in public the
rubber-in-ice-water demonstration.

I study creativity as a psychologist and wonder if this is a true story
that can be used in my classes...
(The story was that Dr. Feynman was watching some Frisbees in flight and
made some kind of idea-transfer and this resulted in redesign of the
curvature in the shuttle tiles to help prevent or minimise ablation).

I think Feynman did talk about watching a Frisbee in flight
and following that to some other idea, but I don't remember what it
was. It's probably described in _What Do You Care What Other People
Think_ or else _Surely You're Joking, Mr Feynman_, which do have a
fair number of anecdotes in which he describes thought processes.

Hmm, I've read both don't recall such an incident in either, but it's been
awhile..
