yes.
They do after launch at 0g (= freefall).
open the hatch would be an issue too
Once in orbit they open the hatch to get into the orbital module. Both
is possible, but I doubt they had enough time to bail out.
It isn't a free fall, there is drag on the vehicle. Also, what says
it isn't tumbling
On the first manned space flight Gagarin was actually ejected from Vostok
capsule and landed using personal parachute. It's the fact that for a while
was denied by soviets. Later on with 3 man crews it became simply
impractical for the reasons stated above. The hole is too small, there's
not enough time, and extra weight is a problem. So they ruled it out.
